FlashVPN: Could this be the best VPN proxy for Android yet?

FlashVPN is yet another completely free VPN proxy made available for Android smartphone users. Although the proxy service is known to provide solutions for some issues faced by Internet users, it certainly lacks in various other areas.

What is FlashVPN?

Based in the United States, FlashVPN has been around for about 8 years now and is known to help tackle the issues of cybercrime and Internet censorships. But, does the VPN proxy excel in solving all possible Internet-related issues?

Is My Privacy Protected with FlashVPN?

First of all, FlashVPN doesn’t have a dedicated website that can be visited to learn more about the service and its Privacy Policy. The only access you have to gather information about the service is their Google Play page. Fortunately, we were able to find the app developer’s Privacy Policy right there, which starts with the statement, “we take your privacy seriously”.
When it comes to monitoring, their statement goes, “We do not monitor your traffic. The only thing we monitor if the IPs you are using to enter our servers are not blacklisted in respected Black lists databases, like spamhaus.org. This monitoring is provided for your and our security”. Although this doesn’t really bother us, what really concerns us are the permissions required by the app when it is installed.
In addition to requesting permission to know your approximate and precise location, the FlashVPN app also asks for permission to access your Wi-Fi connection information, Device ID & call information, full network access, network connections viewing, change network connectivity, and more. Above all, it requests access to your photos, media and files, and to modify the content of your storage, which we don’t understand the reason for. We think that this is just too much information required by a VPN service provider. And regardless of whether or not the service could use this information for malicious activities, it does leave us highly concerned about our privacy when using the app. Overall, we are not happy with the level of privacy the VPN proxy service offers, and we did not see a kill switch option either.

How Much is FlashVPN? Is There a Free Trial?

As mentioned earlier, FlashVPN is a completely free VPN proxy service, which means you can use the service for as long as you want without having to pay a dime. Of course, like with any free VPN service, you will face ads when using the app, which can be very annoying at times. Since there is no paid pricing plan, there is no money-back guarantee either.

FlashVPN Speed Test

Although the company mentions that they deploy VPN servers in United States, England and Japan, the locations we were offered when testing the app were Germany, United States, England, and France. Also, there is no indication on the total number of servers owned and operated by the VPN proxy service. Nevertheless, we did run a speed test by connecting to servers in the locations made available to us and experienced inconsistent speeds across different locations. While the speeds we experienced would be more than enough for regular browsing and basic video streaming, it may not be suitable for P2P file sharing, torrenting and HD video streaming.

How is Customer Service at FlashVPN?

Proper customer service is one of the main aspects that sets a VPN service apart from its competition. It is also what attracts new users to the service and helps retain existing users as well. Unfortunately, FlashVPN doesn’t do well in terms of customer service. As a matter of fact, there is no option for customer support is the only thing available is the developer’s email ID on the service’s Google Play page and we don’t think this has anything to do with attaining support from the team. There is no such option on the app either. The only thing you can possibly do is post a review on the Google Play page based on your experience.

As discussed before, FlashVPN is a free VPN proxy service available exclusively for users of Android devices running versions 4.0.3 and up. The app has seen more than 5 million downloads, with an average user rating of 3. Unlike our other VPN reviews, there really isn’t much to discuss about this service, simply because it lacks an efficient website and there literally aren’t many features on the app itself.
The FlashVPN app, similar to most free VPN proxy services, is very basic. When you launch the app, you will be welcomed with a full-screen ad, every single time, after which you will see the Smart Tunnel: On/Off indication with a Connect button right below. You can choose the server location on your own or let the app choose it for you. There is nothing else available on the app, except for ads, and a lot of them.

Perhaps the best aspect of FlashVPN app is the one-click to connect feature, which works well. Also, the fact that the service is available for free makes it a good option for those looking to do some basic browsing and video streaming.

Is FlashVPN Safe?

Since FlashVPN is a VPN proxy service, there isn’t much you can expect in terms of security. The service is mainly meant to give you access to geographically restricted websites, which it does quite well. However, although it mentions VPN encryption, there is no information on the type of protocols or encryption standards used by the service. As a result, we wouldn’t recommend it for those looking for a secure VPN connection for their online activities. One positive aspect pertinent to security is that we did not detect DNS or IP leaks during our tests.

Bottom Line

As a totally free proxy VPN service, FlashVPN could be the ideal choice for those users looking to perform some basic browsing and streaming activities online. However, for those of you looking for a full-fledged VPN service to protect your online privacy, security and anonymity, this certainly isn’t the best choice. Even as a free service, FlashVPN must make many improvements, especially in terms of features and customer service, in order to compete with other similar offerings.
