ExpressVPN Review

ExpressVPN is a ranking provider of powerful online protections for its clients. It offers unlimited speeds and a full suite of features for Mac, Windows, Android, and iOS devices. Clients can enjoy a 30-day money-back guarantee with ExpressVPN, with browser extensions for Firefox, Safari, and Chrome. Additional tools complement the range of features available with ExpressVPN.

Is My Privacy Protected with ExpressVPN?

ExpressVPN provides explicit details about how they manage your personal data in their privacy policy. ExpressVPN maintains that they do not collect any logs of user activity. This means that no DNS queries, no traffic destination data, no browsing history, and no data content is logged. ExpressVPN never stores IP address logs, connection logs, outgoing VPN IP addresses, session durations, or connection timestamps. So therefore if you are concerned whether or not using ExpressVPN is safe, then rest assured it is.

This VPN provider collects only the minimum amount of data needed to operate its services. In this regard, the following information is collected: name, payment details, and email address. While personal information is collected for administering your account, nothing related to your browsing activity is maintained. To cut a long story short: only information required for subscribing to premium services and accessing customer support is kept.

Your personal information may be used to receive marketing materials from ExpressVPN, but clients always have the option to opt out. Given that ExpressVPN does not maintain user logs, IP addresses, or DNS queries, they are unable to comply with requests for information from the authorities. ExpressVPN collects information about successful connections to their service on specific dates, but no times are recorded. They also collect country/ISP provider information, but not your personal IP address.

With regards to any legal orders from the BVI (British Virgin Islands) Supreme Court, ExpressVPN cannot provide any useful information about specific users given that minimal data is collected to begin with. ExpressVPN maintains records of client correspondence with the company, and information passes through the customer support services in SnapEngage and Zendesk. ExpressVPN states that even if government agencies seize their servers and decrypt the security protocols, there would be no connection logs and no data to incriminate any ExpressVPN user of wrongdoing.

How Much is ExpressVPN? Is there a Free Trial?

ExpressVPN offers several plans for clients. The most basic plan is the 1-month plan at $12.95 per month. This plan comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee for users. If you are unhappy with the service for any reason, you will be fully refunded. The 6-month plan is billed at a rate of $9.99 per month, or $59.95 every 6 months. This plan is also backed by a 30-day money-back guarantee. Once again, ExpressVPN offers a 30-day money-back guarantee on this plan.

In all instances, ExpressVPN offers clients a free trial by way of the 30-day money-back guarantee. To get started with the plans, clients simply need to complete the 3-step process of choosing a plan, entering their email address, and choosing a payment method. For enhanced anonymity, it is possible to use a burner email and pay with cryptocurrency (Bitcoin) to reduce the collection of personally identifiable information. ExpressVPN does not offer a ‘business’ plan; rather it offers an all-in-one solution which provides server addresses which are located elsewhere, rather than at work or at home. ExpressVPN software is easy to install, and can be configured for use in any location.

As noted earlier, ExpressVPN is costlier than other top-ranked VPN services. NordVPN is significantly cheaper, with a starting price of $2.99 per month and a 30-day money-back guarantee. Ivacy is priced at $2.25 per month with a 30-day money-back guarantee, and CyberGhost VPN comes at a starting price of $3.50 per month, with a 45-day money-back guarantee. It is also possible to enjoy 100% free VPN services such as UrbanVPN, however you will be forgoing many additional features, privacy considerations, and customer support features That ExpressVPN is more expensive should be weighed against the benefits you enjoy from using this service.

ExpressVPN Speed Test

Source: ExpressVPN

ExpressVPN offers a complimentary speed test service to all users.  Our in-house experts conducted a speed test without any VPN service running to get a baseline reading. We managed to get an internet speed test completed in under 30 seconds with a 9.85 Mbps download speed and a 3.46 Mbps upload speed. Our latency time was 6 ms with our local server in Miami, Florida. After running various tests, we concluded that significant slowdowns take place depending on the server location you are using with ExpressVPN.

Local VPN servers offer mediocre upload and download speeds, although this is typically more than 60% slower than download and upload speeds without a VPN. Remote servers are associated with slower download and upload speeds. Your latency time will always increase when using a VPN service, and ExpressVPN is no different. The ExpressVPN speed test configuration automatically ranks locations by speed index, latency and/or, download speed. This feature is useful for picking the fastest server that is currently available at ExpressVPN. Your actual performance may vary from the listed results, based on a host of factors.

The Domain Name System (DNS) is what allows your Internet Service Provider (ISP) to see which websites you are browsing. It also provides additional details such as timestamps and dates. With ExpressVPN, your ISP will not have access to your browsing history.  DNS uses IP addresses which are numerically configured. DNS can configure readable names into numbers which are known as an IP address. ExpressVPN servers manage all DNS requests of their clients, not your ISP service. This means that the authorities will not be able to subpoena records of sites you are visiting when you use ExpressVPN. On the basis of speed when considering Express VPN vs NordVPN, then our research leads us to the conclusion that Express VPN is the victor.

Features of ExpressVPN

Source: ExpressVPN Features

ExpressVPN is stocked up on world-class features. The basic features are impressive enough, and include 160+ VPN server locations across 94 countries. ExpressVPN also provides split-tunneling services which makes it possible to reroute specific internet traffic through VPN, while allowing other traffic to go through the internet unencrypted. With ExpressVPN, it is possible to access any website content in any location. This helps to bypass geolocation-based restrictions, and government censorship. ExpressVPN has also rolled out apps for Routers, Android devices, iOS smartphones and tablets, Linux, Windows and Mac computers.

The security features are particularly impressive. With AES-256 encryption technology, ExpressVPN holds its own with the best of them. Further, ExpressVPN offers IP address masking by simply changing your IP address through ExpressVPN servers. Since there are no connection logs or activity logs, it is impossible to share details of your online activity with government authorities. This enhances your anonymity and safety online.

ExpressVPN also fully supports OpenVPN protocol. In fact, you can choose the type of protocol to use including L2TP/IPsec, TCP - OpenVPN, or UDP – OpenVPN. Finally, ExpressVPN maintains a fully encrypted and private DNS on every server in the company. This means that even if government authorities seize and decrypt the servers, they will not be able to tie individual account holders to any online activity.

ExpressVPN allows clients to connect up to 3 devices at the same time, and if you have a wireless router you can hook up more devices. ExpressVPN works on Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, Routers, and Linux, as well as web browsers such as Safari, Firefox, and Chrome. It also offers anonymous services for gaming and media consoles such as Fire TV, Apple TV, PlayStation, and Xbox. IP switching is easily done within the network, and uninterrupted browsing is possible with no threat of revealing your true IP, thanks to the kill switch feature.

How Safe is ExpressVPN?

Privacy and security go hand in hand. With ExpressVPN, you have full confidence knowing that this company is based in the British Virgin Islands (BVI). This jurisdiction has no data retention laws in place and they do not share information with other countries such as the 5-Eyes or 14-Eyes countries. Safety is further enhanced by way of its logging policy.

For starters, ExpressVPN never logs DNS queries, metadata, sites you have visited, your overall browsing history, or your IP address. The kill switch (mentioned earlier) is known as Network Lock at ExpressVPN. It is turned on by default, meaning that as soon as your internet connection drops or disconnects, your IP address will never be revealed. ExpressVPN has not been associated with any major security breaches or hacks over the years.

Perhaps the most important safeguard in place is ExpressVPN’s ownership of its servers. With various options available when it comes to encryption protocols (L2TP/IPsec, PPTP, OpenVPN), you've pretty much got all your bases covered. AES-256-CBC encryption using SHA-256 HMAC authentication ensures that your data remains safe at all times. No DNS leaks or IP address leaks have been reported and that bodes well for users.

A WebRTC leak test is provided free of charge to users on site. With ExpressVPN, you can prevent WebRTC leaks at all times. Web real-time communication allows browsers to easily communicate with one another. However, this information can get intercepted by hackers and used for nefarious purposes. ExpressVPN browser extensions allow you to disable WebRTC from your settings so that you are not vulnerable to caching. In-depth guides relating to website security are provided as a value-added service to ExpressVPN clients.

Bottom Line

ExpressVPN goes the distance when it comes to safety, security and anonymity online. Although a little pricy, it provides a full suite of value-added services and security features declines. There are some 160+ servers located across 94 countries, with unlimited speeds in certain locations. The large global network ensures that you will always find a VPN server to meet your needs. ExpressVPN is ideal for accessing geolocation-blocked content, Hulu, Netflix, BBC iPlayer and other streaming services.

It features maximum encryption (AES-256 bit) with SHA-256 authentication protocols. With thousands of servers around the world, you are assured of consistent speeds and reliable performance. While ExpressVPN works well, it is limited to 3 simultaneous connections. Split tunneling, Network Lock, and BVI jurisdiction offer peace of mind when browsing the web. Since your IP address is never logged, and your browsing information is not collected, it stands to reason that users of this service are safe from government overreach.

When I started using EVPN the speed was fast, no buffering and no breaks. But soon I could see the performance dip. Now I get dropped connection occasionally. Not satisfied with the service after the money I had to shell out. I’m thinking of using the refund offer.
I bought EVPN a few weeks back. The set up and features are good but I cannot use the extensions. I called customer support but I haven’t been able to correct the issue so far. Not very good support, if they couldn’t correct such a small issue, right!
The encryption used by EVPN is too overboard. While security is necessary it needless interferes with the speed. The features are okay and so is the customer support. I can watch Netflix and Hulu but not BBCiPlayer. The support is yet to come up with a solution to this issue.
I recently bought EVPN as I was not happy with my earlier VPN provider. After using the slower than slowest streaming VPN services I was simply in awe at the speed the shows streamed. While the price is a bit high, the speed itsel...Read More
The price is too high for the average user. Especially the monthly rate is too high. Though the service
promises good speed and quality I still have problems with streaming. The configurations are not that

I bought EVPN after reading the rave reviews. But it does not measure up to the hype. I had problem connecting with my laptop and desktop and used the chat service. Though the response was quick my problem was not solved. This is poor service for the kind of money they charge.
This being my first attempt at using a VPN service I was worried about the set up. But the instructions are so easy that I had it installed in minutes. The streaming is quite fast and I love the uninterrupted show time. The privacy and security are well managed and the support is also very prompt.
With VPNs you are never sure what you will get. Some offer Netflix in full but are not so good in other services like Hulu, HBO etc. But EVPN surprisingly covers pretty much everything that I want to watch – Netflix, Hulu, BBCiPlayer and all extensions too. I love this no holds barred service.
EVPN is definitely a superior service not only in the speed area but also the quality it provides. The default protocol choice, no log record and access to zillions of shows that I couldn’t watch otherwise are really fantastic fea...Read More
