HIDEMAN VPN REVIEW
Hideman has been around for a couple of years now and has since struggled to prove itself in this world of numerous VPNs. Let us venture into its features and determine whether or not it succeeded in proving itself on the market.
Is My Privacy Protected with Hideman VPN?
A VPN will be an absolute waste of money if they are keeping track of everything that you do online. Luckily for you, Hideman don’t keep any of your browsing data. However, in the free trial period your browsing data will be kept for 14 days with RSA 2048 encryption which will be deleted after every 14 days.
Information Collection and Use
Company collects personally identifiable information when you register for a Hideman Service account, and when you use certain company products and services. Company may also receive personally identifiable information from our resellers and other business partners. When you register with Hideman Service, we ask for your contact information (such e-mail address). In the course of processing a payment transaction, we typically receive from the merchant or a financial institution information related to the transaction. This normally includes information about the payment that a consumer has furnished the merchant or the financial institution in placing the order.
Protecting personally identifiable information about clients is an important part of our business. We share and disclose such information only as described below. Company sends personally identifiable information about you to other companies or people:
• When we have your consent to share the information;
• When we need to share your information with third parties, such as banks and credit card processors, to provide the product or service you have requested;
• When it is appropriate to comply with law;
• When it is necessary to enforce or apply the terms and conditions of our license agreement;
• When it is necessary to protect the rights, property, or safety of company, our users, or others, which may include the exchange of information with other organizations for fraud protection and/or risk reduction.
Information security is vital to our business. We work to protect the security of your information during transmission by using Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) software, which encrypts information. The information gathered on secure computers is stored in a locked down data center. We use firewalls and other security technology, and implement and abide by the highest industry standard security practices, to prevent our computers from being accessed by unauthorized persons.”
How Much is Hideman VPN? Is There a Free Trial?
Hideman offers the following packages:
• Mobile kicks in at $2.9 per month or $24.9 per year.
• Ultimate, which covers up to four simultaneous connections on Mac, Win, Linux, and mobile + browser extensions, will set you back $9 a month or $69 if billed annually.
• Private covers all platforms, but lets you choose the location you need at the cost of $9 per month.
Hideman offers a free trial limited to 7 hours, and after that, you can get 4 hours weekly for free. No registration is required, but once the countdown begins, it goes all the way down to zero even if you force-close the app from the Task Manager.
The free app however, doesn’t let you connect to the US or UK servers, as well as another dozen interesting servers, and caps your speeds (512kb/s). These draconian limitations beat the actual purpose of a free trial, especially if you’re looking to unblock streaming websites like Netflix US or BBC iPlayer.
Hideman accepts credit cards, PayPal, Mint, WebMoney, and some other options including Bitcoin. All paid plans are backed by a 30-day refund policy, which isn’t overly restricting.
Hideman VPN Speed Test
Hideman’s free account has an unusual restriction on session times. You’re not just limited in terms of time – six free hours initially, then four free hours a week – but these sessions are allocated in one-hour blocks. This means that when you start a session, your free allowance drops by one hour, whether you stay connected for one minute or the full 60.
If you can live with these issues, Hideman’s performance is very acceptable. Our speed tests* showed that the service delivered around 30Mbps for the fastest locations and around 20 to 25Mbps from the UK to North America.
What’s more, despite the company saying it might restrict speeds to only 512Kbps on the free plan, our tests showed no obvious limiting at all. That doesn’t mean it won’t happen – presumably it depends on your chosen location and the server load – but you could find free performance is better than some commercial services.
Privacy, unfortunately, is a slightly different story. Our IP checks showed Hideman gave us addresses in the locations we selected, but ipleak.net showed a DNS leak on the Windows client, meaning the internet resources we were accessing could still be visible to our ISP.
How is Customer Service at Hideman VPN?
They have wide range of support options like
• Live chat, that can solve your problems instantly or can give assistance to you very quickly.
• Skype, it is more of live chat
• Email ticketing system if you are having serious issues or the ones that need future follow-ups
• Jabber one not used by many
Hideman VPN supports Win, Mac, iOS, Android and Linux, and also comes as a browser extension for Chrome, Safari, IE, Firefox, and Opera.
So, moving on to the desktop app, which is a smart combination of a minimalist style, functionality, and usability. It’s not the most advanced VPN client I’ve seen, but it lets you tweak the proxy settings and port forwarding. It also has a nifty tab that displays connection details:
The program is intuitive and comes with an embedded Help tab that gets some of the fundamental questions out of the way. Support is ticket-based, but you can also try to reach them via Skype and Jabber. Just keep in mind that they’re available during office hours.
There is a toggle to switch between TCP/UDP, enable a kill switch, use anti-DPI mode, and disable DNS filter.
Other than that, the free trial is limited to a dozen of servers that I couldn’t find a use for, because my primary objective was to get unfettered access to the US and UK servers.
Their FAQs section may not be the largest VPN knowledge base out there, but it covers the most important concerns right out the door.
Is Hideman VPN Safe?
P2P is allowed, and the FAQs conveniently list the P2P-friendly locations. Hideman relies on OpenVPN (with support for PPTP and L2TP/IPSec), and 256-bit AES encryption backed by RSA-2048 or DH-2048 (IPSEC), which is good. The apps come with a kill switch, DPI protection, and a toggle to disable DNS filtering.
