DroidVPN: How good is a personal VPN?
DroidVPN was originally started to provide VPN support exclusively for Android users but later they have expanded to Windows as well. A strong Mac and iOS interface is still under works and we can expect it to be unveiled soon to attract more users.
What is DroidVPN?
DroidVPN has its HQ in the Philippines, and therefore belongs to a handful of companies that have an operating base in Asia. Claiming to be an easy to use personal VPN, how much can this service actually deliver?

How Much is DroidVPN? Is There a Free Trial?
DroidVPN offers both free and premium subscription plans, and the free version is quite attractive for a mild surfer who doesn’t have to pay for the service.
• Free – This comes with a limit set at 200MB data transfer per day and 2 server access.
• Monthly – $4.99/month.
• 3 months – $4.66/month, which is billed quarterly at $13.99.
• 6 months – $3.99/month, which is billed every 6 months at $23.95.

Those who sign up for any of the premium membership plans will get all the features offered by the service provider without any limitations or restrictions. At the moment, the company offers a 7-day refund policy and subscribers must apply for the refund within 7 days of subscribing. Those who have opted for a free plan and want to upgrade to any of the premium plans can do so right from the Android app and make payment via PayPal/ PayMoney/ Bitcoin.
DroidVPN Speed Test
DroidVPN has around 29 servers located in 9 different countries, and you would know, performance metrics is a key criterion to check in a VPN. The Android app, which is the flagship support offered by the company, performed remarkably well. They also provide PC VPN connectivity and the speeds experienced there were more or less similar. We experienced a speed drop off of around 2 to 3 times the ordinary network connection, which is the standard. Free subscription plan users will not be able to experience good speeds, which again is something to be expected.
How is Customer Service at DroidVPN?
We were disappointed by the fact that we couldn’t find the right support service for our queries, because when we clicked on the support icon at the bottom right corner, we were redirected to the home page. Even the contact link led to the Terms of Service page and all we found there was an email address. This means that the company is not transparent enough and doesn’t offer a reliable form of support to its subscribers.
An FAQ section with a few general answers is available and for most of the complex issues, you need to write to the email address given by the company. The addition of email ticketing, live chat support, etc. would have been better rather than just an email address. Even the response times were poor, ranging between 1 and 2 days.
As discussed earlier, DroidVPN is often misinterpreted to be an Android specific VPN service alone, but right now, they are offering Android and Windows PC support, with a Mac OS version soon to be released. PC client users should make sure to know where their downloads go, because you wouldn’t find any icon on your home page as soon as the download is complete. The software on Windows or the Android app has multiple settings which can be chosen depending on the user’s requirements.
Compared to the Android app, the Windows Droid version is sub-par and requires a lot of performance improvements. You do not get notifications when the connection is terminated automatically, which is not ideal for a PC-based subscriber. Subscribers have the option of fiddling around with different settings such as HTTP, UDP, TCP, Proxy, etc.
• ICMP tunneling support.
• Unlimited bandwidth (premium plans).
• 200MB/day data limit for free users.
• Unlimited server switching (premium plans).
• P2P sharing and torrenting supported.
• 1 license per user.
• 7-day refund policy.
Given above are some of the key features offered by DroidVPN and for the price point at which these features are offered, subscribers are well served.
Is DroidVPN Safe?
OpenVPN and ICMP are the two different protocol connections offered by this VPN service. By default, the user will have UDP-based OpenVPN protocol connection, which you can change to ICMP, but this protocol supports only rooted devices. Internet Control Message Protocol is a secured tunnel which subscribers can use to unblock a few websites without getting caught or monitored. A highly secure Internet connection such as this one is perfect for streaming HD videos, movies, P2P sharing and torrenting.
DroidVPN will not come to your mind right away when you think about a VPN, but it does the job in most cases for an Android user. With over a million downloads and counting, Android-based DroidVPN service is certainly an attractive prospect. But, on the other hand, it is definitely not suitable for Windows and iOS users at the moment. With a few weak points in the form of customer support and privacy, it has a long way to go to become part of the top VPN companies in the world.
