ClearVPN has been around for a while, and even though it’s not very famous I believe that it does have something to offer. All VPNs have something to offer in general, some offer more disappointment than excitement, but let us look into ClearVPN and see what exactly awaits us.
Is My Privacy Protected with ClearVPN?
“Clear VPN takes your privacy very seriously and our policy is simple: We will never sell, loan, or distribute any of your personal information to another party. Additionally we use Bluesnap as a payment provider so you are assured that we never have access to your credit card information and are fully PCIDSS compliant.
When you log onto Clear VPN, the only personal information we monitor is related to the establishment of the connection itself. We do this in order to be able to troubleshoot connection problems and keep the network running. We know that you have connected to the service but we do not know or record anything about the actual data you are transmitting. Your data comes in encrypted and, once the data is unencrypted on our server, it is sent directly out to its destination without any logging or monitoring of any kind. “
How Much is ClearVPN? Is There a Free Trial?
Clear VPN has great offers when it comes to pricing, not cheap by any means but not unaffordable either. Clear VPN’s pricing is also a little more complex than those from most other VPN providers. Most just offer one service at a fixed monthly fee. The trick is the same as other VPNs though, where you get to save more by signing up for longer.
For instance, the UK-only service costs $9.75 per month for those subscribing on a recurring monthly basis, but $90 per year for an annual contract, which works out at a lower price of $7.50 per month.
The dual and triple country VPN services are actually more expensive and, more importantly, only available on a six or twelve-month contract basis. The cost of an annual subscription, with access to all available servers (in the UK, USA and Canada) costs $165 per year, which comes to $13.75 per month. With Clear VPN it is fair to consider this pricing as a little above average, because there are other VPN services that provide greater country options for a lower fee.
Clear VPN does offer a 7-day free trial of their service, which is great except it takes your payment details up-front. The payments begin automatically if you do not cancel the service before the end of the trial period, which many will agree is not so great.
“Sign up for an account and receive a 7-day free trial. Cancel your account before the free trial ends and pay nothing. Happy with your account and our payment provider will process your order at the end of the 7 days.
Do you offer a money back guarantee?
Yes on top of our 7 day free trial we offer a 7 day money back guarantee with no questions asked.“
ClearVPN Speed Test
After being impressed with the basics of getting Clear VPN to work, it is only natural that I was also keen on its performance. Specifically, on its speed. When it comes to speed, Clear VPN is not the best I’ve seen but it is also not the worst. There was no buffering during streaming and overall its speed wasn’t that bad.
How is Customer Service at ClearVPN?
Clear VPN’s support options are quite limited to be honest. If you click the “Contact” link on their website, it provides you with a single form for queries and support requests, which comes with an assurance that messages will be answered within 24-hours. If you prefer guaranteed 24/7/365 support, this isn’t the service for you. However, in all fairness, the test support query we sent via email was answered quickly, within approximately two hours, which isn’t so bad.
Clear VPNs FAQ, however, answers the most basic question, but it is still better than not having an FAQ section at all.

Is ClearVPN Safe?
Clear VPN states most emphatically on the homepage that, in terms of privacy, they don’t do logging or monitoring of any kind, especially when it comes to the data moving through their VPN service. They do, however, only maintain connectivity information for troubleshooting purposes. This is reassuring for users who wish to use a service that does not maintain any logs.
ClearVPN primarily uses the OpenVPN protocol together with a 2048-bit encryption. The company also offers L2TP/IPSEC options for those with mobile devices that don’t support OpenVPN. The detailing on this was rather impressive and easily available, unlike other VPNs that keep this type of information private, which can be very unsettling for users.
“Put in simple terms ClearVPN will secure your data by encrypting each packet and wrapping it in an envelope which has its destination printed on it. Anyone intercepting this envelope could see its intended destination, but not the contents (because the contents are encrypted.) Once the envelope arrives at the ClearVPN server it is unwrapped, decrypted, and then sent on to its final destination, ensuring the security of all your email, passwords and data.
OpenVPN offers some of the strongest encryption available (2048 bit) and will work in places where PPTP VPN is blocked. Places we have seen PPTP VPN blocked are locations in China and the Middle East like Oman, Kuwait, Qatar, Dubai and the UAE.
Clear VPN uses the OpenVPN program to provide its customer with the highest level of security, which receives Veracode’s Highest Possible “A” Security Rating and is open source code so you can be 100% sure of the absence of government backdoors.”
Clear VPN has managed to impress on several fronts, but it does need to improve its features to be more competent. Its customer support could use a little bit of work as well, but it is generally a great VPN service.
