With identity theft, hacking, snooping, and other fraudulent online activities spreading all across the world, people find nowhere and no internet connection to be safe. This has pushed people towards looking for a reliable solution. Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) happen to be a widely preferred and used solution for such issues.
Established by Anuson, a private company in Hong Kong, 12VPN is designed to provide internet users with a secure and convenient way to access the internet. The company promises amazing online privacy, security, and freedom, but does it really ensure that users are not taken advantage of when using the internet? Let’s see.
Is My Privacy Protected with 12VPN?
However, with further digging, we were able to find an interview with their customer support department in charge for a different website. In said interview, when asked about their logging policy, the interviewee stated: We record login and logout data and keep this for 30 days. We also record VPN related errors and keep this for 24-48 hours for troubleshooting purposes. She added that the company doesn’t advertise their policy to avoid giving a false sense of anonymity.
How Much is 12VPN? Is There a Free Trial?
12VPN offers three different pricing plans: three months, six months, and 12 months. If you choose the three months plan, you have to pay $29.97 every three months, a price of $9.99 per month. The six months plan is $53.95 bi-annually, a rate of $8.99 per month. The yearly plan is $71.88 annually, a rate of $5.99 per month. They’re asking for a lot of money in their marketspace, with no significant advantage over other providers.
Obviously, you save money with the annual plan, but there’s no free trial. How do you check their services and performance? If you wish to test the services before committing for a longer duration, the only option is a 14-day money back guarantee. To be eligible for a refund within this 14 days period, you can’t have used more than 5GB of bandwidth during that time. They do have a standout feature. All their plans are inclusive of VPN, Auto-Proxy, and SmartDNS at no additional cost. 12VPN accepts Visa, MasterCard, American Express, PayPal, UnionPay, Alipay, and Bitcoin.
12VPN Speed Test
At the time of this review, 12VPN had VPN servers located in a total of 14 countries. They don’t mention the exact number of servers they operate. Therefore, we’re not really sure of the network coverage you’ll get from the service.
As to speed, despite the limited number of server locations, the connection speed we received from 12VPN was quite reliable. Even after obtaining a connection, the servers performed very well for most of the time, no lags or interruptions.
Since the VPN service allows unlimited downloads and server switches, depending on the server you choose for your connection, you will be able to stream and download files and other content without any trouble. However, the service doesn’t allow Bittorrent. Bummer.
How is Customer Service at 12VPN?
Unlike many other VPN service providers, both leaders and newcomers, 12VPN doesn’t offer comprehensive customer support features. There are two ways you can contact the company for support, email and voicemail.
In the case of email support, the VPN service has two different emails, one for users with a Chinese email provider and the other for everyone else. You can expect a response within 24 hours of the submission of your email. Even with the voicemail, you cannot talk to a customer service representative directly, but can only leave a message and your email address to receive a response.
There is no 24/7 support or a live chat feature. You can follow 12VPN on social media platforms to stay up to date on their developments.
Signing up is quite easy. You choose the pricing plan you want, then a payment method, some basic details, and you’re good to go. You receive step-by-step instructions for the installation of the client software.
12VPN has servers located in the UK, USA, Canada, Singapore, Japan, Spain, Switzerland, Netherlands, France, Hong Kong, Israel, Germany, Turkey, and Sweden. The company doesn’t give us the exact number of servers they have.
This VPN service supports the basic devices and operating systems: Windows, OS X, iOS, and Android, as well as a Chrome extension. They also support Tomato and DD-WRT routers. The range of devices supported is not as extensive as by many other leading VPN providers.
To protocols, the VPN service is quite comprehensive in this category, supporting all standard VPN protocols, and also others such as WEB, OpenConnect, and Firefox Auto-Proxy. Though the VPN service allows multiple simultaneous connections, it doesn’t give a specific number.
Is 12VPN Safe?
As mentioned before, 12VPN supports a wide range of protocols, which include PPTP, L2TP, SSTP, IPSec, IKEv2, OpenConnect, Firefox AutoProxy, Shadowsocks, and WEB.
The VPN service uses different encryption standards for different protocols. For instance, it uses 128-bit for PPTP and IPSec, both 128- and 256-bit for OpenVPN, and 1024-bit for SSL key. If you are just browsing the website to learn about their offerings, you are not likely to find this information. That’s how complicated it is to find every detail on the website. All that aside, 12VPN manages to provide military grade encryption, and its service also includes NAT firewalls.
If you’re looking for a completely sophisticated and leading VPN service, 12VPN may not be the right choice for you. If you’re just starting your experience in the world of VPNs, you might consider using this one. You’d have to be willing to pay a bit extra for its services. Beginners are likely to get frustrated with the lack of proper information on the website. Aside from these facts, 12VPN is a decent VPN service, but it needs lots of improvement.
