What Is a VPN and Why Do I Need One for Indonesia?

A VPN, or virtual private network is essentially a tool that protects your online identity and activities. By connecting to a private server, that’s usually overseas, it allows you to bypass net censorship, unblock sites, watch region-locked streaming services and, most importantly, protect your personal data from nefarious snoopers.

It’s important for you to get your hands on one because the Indonesian government has had quite a turbulent relationship with the internet in recent years. On the one hand, it’s helped kick-start an economic boom in the country, and the authorities are often promoting the benefits of being connected to its citizens. However, this has always historically been coupled with a very conservative attitude towards censorship.

Recent targets of crackdowns have included temporary blocks of popular social media sites and apps like Facebook, Instagram, and Whatsapp as well as a now-permanent ban on Reddit. What’s more, the authorities are known to frequently go after independent news sites, dating apps, LGBT content, sports broadcasts, online casinos, and anything that’s outwardly critical of the government. At one point, even Netflix was banned for failing to submit a full content library to the Ministry of Communications.

As we can never quite be sure what the government is going to hit next, you’re better off having a VPN ready at all times to bypass any new restrictions.

What Should You Look for in a VPN for Indonesia?

First and foremost, you’re going to want a platform that offers a good range of security features to protect your privacy. In 2018, the Ministry of Communications launched a new crawling tool, called Cyber Drone 9, which scans the web to hunt down users that might be posting inflammatory or radical content.

In many cases, this relates to social media posts that might be critical of the government, and it was recently used in May 2019 to crack down on protesters and rioters in Jakarta that were communicating via social media. Your posts are scrutinized too. Anyone found guilty of so-called defamation could face a prison sentence of up to six years, just for making a comment online.

That’s why it’s important to sign up for a service that has a proven no-log policy coupled with the best encryption tools in place. While the vast majority of us won’t have any ill intentions when we’re online, it’s best to look after your security in case you fall foul of regulations.

Though this sounds like some pretty serious stuff, this is still thankfully only the extreme side of internet censorship in the country. Most users will simply be looking to get around blocks to certain websites since the Indonesian government regularly blocks thousands of sites that it deems unsuitable. To counter this, you’re going to want a VPN that has servers right across the globe; the more choice of locations you have, the more likely you are of finding one that lets you access the sites you want.

With millions of users now primarily consuming internet content on their mobile devices, we’d highly recommend getting a platform that has good multi-device compatibility too. This is particularly important if you’re often connecting via public WiFi.

Another issue that’s been quite common across South East Asia in the past is slow server speeds. Generally, the further away a server is from your location, the slower your connection speed will be, and Indonesia hasn’t been historically well-served by server locations in the past. Many users tend to sign up with a provider that has servers local to the region in places like Singapore, but some platforms have them within Indonesia itself.

One final point to bear in mind is that in August 2020, the Indonesian authorities threatened to block VPNs that don’t censor banned content. While VPNs are still completely legal in the country, this is something that could have future repercussions and means you should look for a service that has a proven track record of getting around these types of geoblocks. That being said, we’d always recommend staying up to date with current laws and regulations to make sure you don’t find yourself in trouble.

Speed and Security Are Key Factors When Choosing a VPN for Indonesia

We can’t reiterate enough just how essential speed and security are when choosing a VPN for Indonesia. You’re going to need a provider that can ensure your complete anonymity online, won’t record any of your personal data, and will protect your online activities. In addition, you’ll want to couple this with a service that isn’t going to slow down your device and can counter the historic speed issues in the region.

Which VPN Is the Fastest and Most Secure for Indonesia?

We’ll admit this has been a tough choice, but the top spot goes to ExpressVPN. It has the fastest connection speeds, a no-logs policy that’s been assessed and verified by external auditors as well as military-grade encryption. What’s more, you’ll find some great extra security tools like a kill switch and split-tunneling options.

The kill switch will automatically disconnect you from the internet as soon as the platform detects that you’re no longer connected to the VPN, meaning no-one will be able to snoop on your activities. Split-tunneling allows you to choose which applications you’d like to run through the service, giving you that added layer of security flexibility.

The platform is well-known for its speed and high-quality connections. This is because it has more than 3,000 servers in 94 countries, and you’ll always be able to find a quick connection.

However, that’s not to say the competition isn’t stiff. We’ve seen some significant improvements to services in recent years as providers seek to take advantage of the huge, growing market in Indonesia. With a population of 267 million, and with more and more citizens turning to VPNs to bypass government censorship than ever before, we can expect even greater investment and tougher competition, so watch this space to see if ExpressVPN can be toppled.

What to Consider When Choosing a VPN for Indonesia

We’ve already stressed just how important security is when searching for a VPN, but below we’ve broken down a few other key points to look out for.

Great Customer Service

If you’ve never used a VPN before it can be a little tricky to get to grips with all the features on offer, and many users won’t know how to get the most out of the service. A good provider will have 24/7 customer support, fast response times and should be able to give you the specific information you need and quickly. For example, if you want to watch some shows on the US version of Netflix, the support team will be able to tell you which server has the best connection for the job.

Price

Often at the top of many customer’s wish lists, price is a key consideration. However, it’s important to balance this against the number of features you’re going to get. For Indonesia specifically, it’s important to have the best security features you can afford, so it’s worth paying that little bit extra to be fully covered.

Intuitive User Interface

In today’s always-online, interconnected world, we expect our technology to work quickly and be easy to understand. It’s important to choose a service that has a clean and modern interface, one where you can access features in just a few clicks and know exactly what you’re dealing with.

Find a Service That’s Proven to Bypass Geoblocks

Given the fact that the Indonesian authorities can often be quite inconsistent on what gets blocked and what doesn’t, it’s important to get a platform that’s proven to bypass even the strongest geo-blocking technology. In August 2020 the government even floated the idea of blocking VPN services that don’t censor banned content, meaning getting your hands on the technology to get around geo-blocks is going to become increasingly important.

 Decent Device Connectivity

More and more Indonesians are consuming content on the go on a range of mobile devices. It’s a good idea to choose a VPN service that’s compatible with a wide range of operating systems and different kinds of devices. This is also a useful tip for any travelers to the region that want to connect to services back home that might be blocked.

Broad Server Coverage

Not only will a varied global server network allow you to take advantage of accessing blocked content and ensuring your security, but it’s also a useful tool for any Indonesian expats living overseas. If you can find a service with servers located in Indonesia, it’s no problem to connect and catch up on all the shows and news you miss.

Look for Features That Prevent Cyber Crime

It’s not just government surveillance you need to worry about, as Indonesia is becoming a hot spot for cyberattacks as the number of citizens taking to the net keeps increasing. Criminals tend to prey on naive new users, so we highly recommend you look for a no-log VPN that won’t record any personal details, including financial and non-essential biographic information.

Extensive Review – Full Overview of Top 5 VPN Services:

Written By: Kazi

1. ExpressVPN

ExpressVPN takes the top spot for its wide range of security features, excellent speeds, efficient customer service, large global server network, varied device compatibility, and multiple simultaneous logins.

The service ticks off all of the most important requirements for any internet user in Indonesia, with security taking top priority. It might not have as extensive a range of features as other providers, but the ones it does have are the best on the market. This currently includes military-grade AES 256-bit encryption, spoofing of your HTML geolocation data, a kill switch that cuts your connection when the VPN drops, a no-logs policy to ensure none of your activities are ever recorded, and proven technology to bypass geoblocks.

Whatever content the authorities decide to censor, there’s an excellent chance ExpressVPN will allow you to access it completely privately and anonymously. As the company is located in the British Virgin Islands, it’s under no obligation to ever provide any information as no data-sharing agreement exists between the Islands and Indonesia.

What’s more, in the unlikely event that anyone does get a hold of the physical servers themselves, no data would be found anyway. This is because every one of the provider’s servers operates in RAM-Disk mode, meaning all data is wiped every time servers powers down.

Add to this the fact that the company has developed its own in-house encryption tool, and is even offering prizes for anyone that can break its iron-clad security, you can rest easy knowing your online browsing is safe and secure.

There’s plenty on offer for those looking to stream and torrent too. The platform can unblock more than 100 streaming services the world over and has incredibly fast download speeds for anyone that regularly torrents files.

Works with:
Available on: Android, iOS, Linux, Windows, Mac, Kindle Fire, Chromebook, Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Samsung TV, Apple TV, Chromecast, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo, Roku, Nvidia Shield, compatible routers, and more
Data logging Strict no-logs policy
Money-back guarantee 30 days
Number of servers Over 3,000
Top download speed reached 106 Mbps
VPN locations 160 in 94 countries
Maximum devices supported Up to five
24/7 live chat Yes
Plans One-month, six-month, and 12-month

The undisputed market leader. With ultra-fast connection speeds, five simultaneous log-ins, excellent security, and multi-platform compatibility, you can’t go wrong.

Speed

Connection Ping Download Speed Upload Speed
Starting speed US 8 ms 58.56 Mbps 12.25 Mbps
Quick connect US server 10 ms 54.52 Mbps 11.85 Mbps
Manual connect US server 12 ms 53.22 Mbps 11.12 Mbps
Quick connect UK server 140 ms 42.85 Mbps 6.69 Mbps
Manual connect UK server 133 ms 37.64 Mbps 9.21 Mbps
Quick connect FR server 82 ms 40.41 Mbps 11.09 Mbps
Quick connect JP server 180 ms 38.42 Mbps 6.01 Mbps
Quick connect AU server 291 ms 35.11 Mbps 6.09 Mbps

Not Good For... Of course, all of these impressive features don’t come without a price and ExpressVPN is a little more expensive than its rivals. You really do get what you pay for, but if price is the most important factor for you, it might be worth checking out another service on our list.

The platform isn’t a great choice for iOS users, either. Apple’s products are a little underserved at the moment, and some of the more advanced features, like the kill switch and split tunneling, aren’t available.

Bottom Line

If you can afford it, then ExpressVPN is the obvious choice for Indonesian users. Security should always be your first thought when using the internet here, and the platform makes sure that this is something you never need to worry about.

Whether you want to access your social media accounts, watch a YouTube video or check out some independent news sources, this is the one for you. Why not sign up for the 30-day free trial and see what it can do?

2. Surfshark

Surfshark takes our number two spot for Indonesia because you’ll find a lot of impressive security features balanced with a great price. With the average salary in the country standing at around $13,400 per year, a lot of users will be looking for a product that won’t break the bank. The introductory offer here comes in at an impressively low $2.49 per month, with 12 months free when you sign up. Thankfully, this doesn’t mean the platform has had to cut back on security features, though.

Like ExpressVPN, Surfshark also uses best in class AES-256-GCM encryption on top of its own kill switch and no-logging policy. As an added layer of security, each server has a private DNS with a VPN-hopping option to make it even less likely that cybercriminals or the authorities will be able to track your online movements.

These security claims can be backed up by audits carried out by German tech firm, Cure53, following a review it did of the service back in 2018 in which no major issues were identified. We’d like to see more testing like this in the future but are quite comfortable for now that user privacy and data will be safe.

It’s great to see that Surfshark’s mobile apps are very similar to their desktop cousins and, unlike ExpressVPN, iOS has all of the same features as other versions of the app. Where the service really stands out though is the fact that you can connect an unlimited number of devices to the VPN. You’ll have no issue protecting your whole family’s tech here.

Works with:

Key Features

Available on: Windows, Mac, iOS, Linux, Android, Chrome, Firefox, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Xbox, PlayStation, and more
Data logging no-logs policy
Money-back guarantee 30 days
Number of servers 3,200+
Top download speed reached 95 Mbps
VPN locations 65 countries
Maximum devices supported Unlimited
24/7 live chat Yes
Plans One month, six months, and two-year subscriptions

Taking the number two spot for its low price, money-back guarantee, and strict no-log policy.

Speed

Connection Ping Download Speed Upload Speed
Quick connect UK server 34 ms 78 Mbps 23 Mbps
Quick connect US server 23 ms 56 Mbps 34 Mbps

Not Good For... You can’t expect everything to be perfect when you’re paying for a budget option, and the service suffers a little in terms of its speed. While the company has more than 3,200 servers, many located in Southeast Asia, there can be a marked reduction in efficiency. You might be best off connecting to a server in Singapore as those further afield can suffer from noticeable slow-down.

Customer support options could do with a little more care and attention too. While agents are available over live chat 24/7, the information they provide can be a little generic and it can sometimes be difficult to get advice specifically for users in Indonesia. However, this is understandable as Surfshark is a relatively new player in the market and we expect to see improvements in the future.

Bottom Line

The best choice for those on a budget. You won’t see quite as many security features as ExpressVPN but, at roughly one-third of the price, you’re getting an excellent package for your money.

There are still a few areas we’d like to see greater improvements in, but it’s still a great tool for safe and secure browsing.

3. NordVPN

A big name in the industry, NordVPN strikes a good balance between mid-range affordability and a solid suite of security and privacy features. It’s a particularly good offering for users in Indonesia because of its wide range of regional servers to choose from.

With five servers available in Indonesia itself you can stay on top of local news and events, but you’ll also be able to connect to neighboring locations in Malaysia, Singapore, and Australia. This means you’ll be able to quickly bypass censorship blocks without sacrificing speed.

The platform is no slouch when it comes to keeping your data secure either, and you’ll have access to a lot of nice extras including ad-blocking, phishing and malware protection, and DNS leak protection. If anything, you’re spoiled for choice in terms of features, and it might take a little while for beginners to get to grips with everything.

There’s a comprehensive support section on the website with high-quality tutorials and FAQs to common problems. If you can’t find the answer you’re looking for, you can speak to an agent 24/7 via live chat or reach out via email.

Works with:

Key Features

Available on: Android, iOS, Mac, Windows, Chromebook, Linux, Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Vuze, Amazon Fire, Kindle Fire, Deluge, Raspberry Pi, compatible routers, and game consoles
Data logging Strict no-logs policy
Money-back guarantee 30 Days
Number of servers Over 5,400
Top download speed reached 88 Mbps
VPN locations Over 80 in 59 countries
Maximum devices supported Up to six
24/7 live chat Yes
Plans One-month, one-year, and two-year

This provider makes our list for its seven server locations across Indonesia and is well-known for its fast and reliable connections.

Speed

Connection Ping Download Speed Upload Speed
Starting speed US 11 ms 56.23 Mbps 11.71 Mbps
Quick connect US server 10 ms 49.83 Mbps 10.75 Mbps
Manual connect US server 15 ms 46.73 Mbps 10.64 Mbps
Quick connect UK server 148 ms 45.79 Mbps 11.11 Mbps
Manual connect UK server 241 ms 32.01 Mbps 10.85 Mbps
Quick connect FR server 84 ms 49.99 Mbps 11.28 Mbps
Quick connect JP server 361 ms 23.14 Mbps 1.69 Mbps
Quick connect AU server 434 ms 37.97 Mbps 5.84 Mbps

Not Good for... The user interface could be a little more intuitive, and browser extensions can feel a little basic at times. Plus, torrenting can be a little restrictive and is only available on certain servers. You might have to widen your search to a little further afield to find one, bringing with it the sort of download slow-down you might expect.

Bottom Line

NordVPN will be the right choice for you if you’re looking for a dependable all-rounder. It might not particularly excel in any given area, but you get consistent performance at a reasonable price. Despite a couple of minor annoyances, it remains a great choice.

CyberGhost is headquartered in Romania but has been steadily increasing its global presence in recent years and makes it onto our list after an impressive expansion into Southeast Asia. Indonesia is particularly well served with eight server locations to choose from. This regional connectivity has led to some of the fastest connection speeds we’ve seen for Indonesian users.

The platform comes highly recommended for those that love to watch streaming services, as many of the servers come specialized towards this specific purpose. CyberGhost has done its homework, and its customer service team can direct you to the fastest servers for your viewing pleasure.

In fact, you can take things one step further by managing your streaming services directly via an app, seamlessly switching between providers and countries. However, the only downside is that Amazon Prime shows are currently restricted to those in either Indonesia or the US. No other countries are unlocked by the service at the moment.

Security features are strong, but not as extensive as other providers on this list. You’ll get a no-logs policy as standard, multiple levels of encryption, and automatic HTTPS redirections. You should be able to bypass any government censorship efforts easily while keeping your data and activities private.

Overall, it’s an incredibly beginner-friendly tool. Set up takes just a few minutes and the interface is simple enough to understand quite quickly.

Unblocks:

Top download speed reached 88 Mbps
VPN locations Over 100 in 90 countries
Maximum devices supported Up to seven
24/7 live chat Yes
Plans one-month, six-month, and 18-month subscriptions

Extra features like a built-in ad-blocker and servers in nearby Singapore to connect to make this a popular choice for Indonesian users.

Speed

Connection Ping Download Speed Upload Speed
Quick connect UK server 45 ms 79 Mbps 67 Mbps
Quick connect US server 34 ms 67 Mbps 55.99 Mbps

Not good for... Those using iOS can expect a trimmed down service, with several features that are available on Windows and Android missing from the platform. This is by no means unique to CyberGhost, though, and is a common problem with other big names in the industry too.

Advanced options and customization tools are more limited when compared to competitors, so those that like to tinker with their VPNs might be better trying an alternative.

The trial option is also a little short, and only available on Windows. You’ll have 24 hours to give it a go before signing up for one of the packages. Although, if you find you don’t like the service, you can get a full refund within 45 days.

Bottom Line

The service is squarely aimed at the casual internet user. Basically, if you’re a fan of streaming, torrenting or gaming, and want to do so privately and for a decent price, this is the one for you.

If you’re after advanced options and beefed up security, you should opt for one of the bigger brand names.

5. IPVanish

IPVanish might not have any servers located in Indonesia, but it makes our list because this is largely mitigated by an excellent connection via Singapore. Many Indonesian users signed up to the service will often get their local offerings from their ISP, but connect to the neighboring Singapore server to bypass censorship laws and gain access to social media sites and more, with no noticeable drop in speed.

The platform offers unlimited connections for just a few dollars per month, alongside a range of features you won’t find at other providers. As the company owns its own servers, you’ll get up to 250GB of secure online storage for files via its SugarSync tool, meaning your documents will be safe from the prying eyes of the censors.

Other features we like include built-in ad-blocking, dedicated apps for most major platforms and operating systems, 24/7 customer support, and a SOCKS5 Proxy Server for totally anonymous browsing and torrenting.

Where the service really excels is in its usability and onboarding. The company is building something of a reputation for introducing new customers to the world of VPNs and offers in-app tutorials to walk you through different features to make sure you get the most out of your tool.

Works with:

Key Features

Available on: Windows, Mac, iOS, Linux, Android, Amazon Fire Stick, Kodi, Chrome, Firefox, and selected routers
Data logging Strict no-logs policy
Money-back guarantee 30 days
Number of servers Over 1,500
Top download speed reached 87 Mbps
VPN locations Over 150 in 75 countries
Maximum devices supported Unlimited
24/7 live chat Yes
Plans One-month, three-month, and one-year

Top-notch customer support, a large global network of servers, and up to 10 connections at once come together to give you one of the most flexible platforms available.

Speed

Connection Ping Download Speed Upload Speed
Starting speed US 0.9 ms 55.95 Mbps 12.25 Mbps
Quick connect US server 11 ms 52.10 Mbps 10.99 Mbps
Manual connect US server 13 ms 44.96 Mbps 10.81 Mbps
Quick connect UK server 127 ms 44.92 Mbps 9.86 Mbps
Manual connect UK server 148 ms 46.22 Mbps 10.95 Mbps
Quick connect FR server 58 ms 46.22 Mbps 10.95 Mbps
Quick connect JP server 429 ms 31.29 Mbps Mbps
Quick connect AU server 358 ms 29.10 Mbps 7.24 Mbps

Not Good For... The service doesn’t have the best reputation when it comes to unblocking streaming sites. It’s currently unable to bypass restrictions on Amazon Prime or BBC iPlayer, and it can sometimes be a bit of trial and error trying to find a good server for Netflix.

Another downside, but certainly not a deal-breaker, is that IPVanish is based in the US, and therefore subject to US laws. Should the authorities decide to access the company’s servers and information, they’ll be permitted to do so as long as a warrant has been issued.

This is unlikely to affect your browsing activities too much in Indonesia, especially as no logs are kept, but those after that extra layer of security could opt for a platform registered in a more privacy-friendly jurisdiction.

Bottom Line

IPVanish is a good choice for those that need to access blocked sites, like independent news outlets and blocked social media accounts, but aren’t really interested in enhancing their streaming capabilities.

Additional Insights and FAQs

Are VPNs Legal in Indonesia?

Yes, it’s 100% legal to download and use a VPN in Indonesia. However, the government has been making noise recently that suggests it wants to block VPNs that don’t censor banned content. With one of the highest ratios of VPN users in the world, we hope this won’t come to fruition. Watch this space, though.

Popular VPNs That Don’t Work in Indonesia

The good news is that just about every VPN service can be downloaded and used in Indonesia. However, there are some poor quality suppliers to stay away from. These include:

EasyVPN – Known for logging your activity, opening you up to malware and a drag on your device’s performance. We highly recommend you avoid this one
ZenMate – A series of IP address leaks have tarnished the reputation of this provider. Using it could leave you wide open to government surveillance
Hola! VPN – Some users might be enticed in by the free service on offer, but don’t be fooled. The company is known for stealing users’ bandwidth and exposing IPs

Can You Trust Your VPN Service?

Yes, but you need to do your due diligence before signing up. Always read the terms and conditions in detail, and make sure you understand all of the key security features in place. A little bit of research can save you a lot of trouble in the long run.

Of course, trusted reviews like ours are a great way to confirm the validity of a service. We only recommend tried and tested vendors that have data security as a core principle.

Can You Use Free VPNs in Indonesia?

Yes, there’s nothing stopping you from downloading and using a free VPN. However, we’re big believers in the old adage that nothing is ever really free, and by signing up to a non-paying service you can open yourself up to risks of data theft, IP leakage, and malware attacks. With tough punishments for those breaking censorship laws in Indonesia, you’re best using a trusted paid option instead.

How Pervasive Is Internet Censorship in Indonesia?

This can vary. During times of political upheaval, we’ve seen tough crackdowns on all social media and news sites, while other categories like gambling or LBGT sites face a permanent ban. Since you never know what the authorities will target next, it’s safer to always use a VPN.

How Extensive Is Internet Surveillance in Indonesia?

The situation seems to be getting steadily worse year on year in the country, with a government department dedicated to monitoring social media founded in 2018, web crawling tech, and even content manipulation for political gain. A reliable VPN will help you bypass all of this.

What Punishments are There for Breaching Censorship Laws in Indonesia?

Consequences can be quite serious, and those found guilty of defamation on the internet can receive hefty fines and even prison sentences. Many that fall foul of the rules are unaware they’ve done anything wrong. A VPN will hide your IP and prevent the authorities from monitoring your posts.

Can a VPN Prevent Bandwidth Throttling in Indonesia?

Indonesian ISPs are notorious for bandwidth throttling. If a provider detects high usage on certain websites at certain times, it can restrict bandwidth and even cut the site off completely. VPNs completely mitigate this and you can browse in peace.

Can VPNs protect me on public WiFi?

Yes, in fact, many users adopt a VPN for this specific reason. Public WiFi hotspots can leave many open to cyber-attacks and surveillance, but a VPN affords you complete protection.

Do All Major VPN Providers Have Servers in Indonesia?

Not all of them, but an increasing number are locating more servers in the region. If you can’t find a direct connection in Indonesia, you’re sure to find alternatives in neighboring countries.

Summary

With internet censorship showing no signs of slowing down, coupled with new government departments and monitoring tools put forward by the Indonesian authorities, it’s never been more important to get yourself connected to a VPN.

The Ministry of Communications is putting ever greater pressure on ISPs in the country to do a lot of this monitoring work for them, and all are now obligated to follow the government’s instructions via written agreements. So it’s not surprising we’re seeing some of the highest VPN usages in the world here.

Every one of the servers we’ve recommended here has a proven track record of protecting user identities and bypassing the censorship and monitoring tools employed in Indonesia. Outside of these critical criteria, it’s up to you what you want most out of a provider. Some, like ExpressVPN, are tailored to those looking for the ultimate security experience at the fastest speeds; others might want the specialized streaming servers on offer at CyberGhost.

Each of the platforms has a trial period, so we’d recommend trying a few out before you decide to make a final commitment. You’re under no obligation and won’t be locked into any contracts until you’re ready. Most importantly, though, remember to stay safe and don’t risk your privacy and finances by exposing yourself to online threats. Whichever service you decide to go with in the end, we’d recommend taking the leap sooner rather than later.
