Not all VPNs work as well as they’d like you to believe, though. Thankfully, our VPN experts have got you covered with a list of the best VPNs for streaming in 2021.

Written By: Adam Dagan Cyber security & Privacy expert

Despite the vast amount of content on streaming platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu and BBC iPlayer, a lot of content providers and streaming platforms restrict their library of films and TV shows to certain countries. You can get around this by using a VPN to stream whatever you want and whatever streaming platform you fancy, no matter what country you’re from.

What is a VPN and Why Do You Need a VPN for Streaming?

A VPN (virtual private network) encrypts your internet traffic by connecting you to secure networks located all over the world. This means your Internet Service Provider (ISP) can’t see what you’re doing and if you use your VPN to connect to servers located in a different country, it looks like your internet connection is coming from that country. This makes it possible to bypass the geoblocks that many streaming platforms such as Netflix use to restrict their content.

VPNs are the most effective way of watching films and TV shows that aren’t available in your own country, but they have lots of other benefits too, such as improving your online security by encrypting your information and keeping you anonymous online.

What Can I Use a Streaming VPN For?

VPNs are commonly used to stream films and TV shows. Most VPNs can be easily installed onto routers, which means any device connected to your router is also connected to your VPN. Once you’ve done that, you’ll be able to watch films and TV shows from all over the world, from any of your devices.

In addition to bypassing the geoblocks that are used by streaming platforms, you can also use your VPN to keep you safe online as many of the most popular VPNs include excellent security features such as malware and ad blocking, military-grade encryption, kill switches and DNS no-leak protection.

Speed is Important – Which VPN is the Fastest?

You may notice a slight drop in connection speed when your devices are connected to a VPN and when you’re in the middle of binge watching The US Office or Game of Thrones, the last thing you want to see is that dreaded buffering sign.

That’s why it’s important to choose VPNs that offer the fastest possible speeds, no matter which servers you’re connected to. In some cases, you may find that your speeds actually improve if the servers you’re connected to offer a better quality connection than your ISP normally does.

Streaming uses a lot of data and if you’re planning on streaming films and TV shows in ultra HD, you’ll need a VPN that is able to live up to its promise of ultra-fast speeds. Some of the best VPNs offer servers that have been optimised for streaming; they’ll offer you faster connection speeds and have been proven to instantly unblock streaming services.

While there are plenty of VPNs out there and our experts have tested nearly all of them, we’ve found that NordVPN and ExpressVPN offer the fastest connection speeds, with ExpressVPN coming out on top (but only just!). If you don’t want your viewing experience compromised, we’d strongly recommend using either NordVPN or ExpressVPN as your go-to VPN.

Can You Be Tracked if You Use a VPN?

Whether or not you can be tracked using a VPN depends on the VPN you’re using. Most VPNs operate with a strict no-logging policy, which means they do not log or share the information of their users. Other VPNs, usually the smaller ones, do make small logs of user information such as connection times, which could make it possible to identify you if the government came chasing you down for illegal activities online.

You’d have to be doing something pretty serious to capture the government’s attention, though, and as VPNs are legal and perfectly accepted in most countries, you shouldn’t have anything to worry about.

How to Choose a VPN

There are lots of things to consider when you’re choosing a VPN, especially with so many of them out there. In addition to making sure your VPN offers the highest possible connection speeds to guarantee the best possible viewing experience, you should also look out for the following features:

Usability

Your VPN should work so effortlessly that you shouldn’t even notice you’re connected to it. Make sure you choose a VPN with a user-friendly interface that’s easy to navigate and prioritize VPNs that offer instant connections to servers that are guaranteed to unblock streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.

App Support

One of the biggest benefits of apps like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video is you can watch them on your cell phone, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, laptop, Mac… anywhere! It’s important to make sure your VPN is compatible with multiple devices, especially if you won’t be connecting to your VPN through a router while you’re on the move. Some VPNs only offer connections directly through desktop or browser, which means they won’t work on video game consoles or TVs.

Performance

You’re essentially paying for a monthly service once you’ve subscribed to a VPN, so like any service, you want to make sure it’s working properly. Don’t be tempted to scrimp and save money on cheap VPNs. Cheaper VPNs are often unreliable and aren’t able to keep up to date with the regular updates that streaming platforms use to block VPNs, which means you could find yourself in a situation where your VPN no longer works with certain streaming services.

Security

The internet is full of dangers and with malware growing more sophisticated, a lot of internet users can easily fall foul of scammers. A VPN is one of the most effective ways of using your online security and if you’re paying for a VPN subscription to stream films and TV shows, you should be getting the most out of it to make sure it keeps you safe online, too. Prioritize VPNs that offer security features such as military-grade encryption, a clear no-logging policy, DNS leak protection, double VPN protection and ad blocking and malware protection.

Server Numbers and Location

If your VPN has a large selection of servers spread across multiple locations, you’ll be able to watch more films and TV shows as a result. In order to watch Japanese Netflix shows, for example, you’ll need to connect to a server in Japan. Same for Europe or anywhere else in the world. If your VPN only offers servers located in the United States, you won’t be able to watch content from other countries. It’s important that in addition to having a large selection of servers to choose from, they’re also reliable and deliver the connection speeds that they promise.

The 10 Best VPNs : Full Overview

1. NordVPN

As one of the fastest VPNs out there, NordVPN takes our top pick for the best VPN for streaming. There are over 5000 servers located in 59 countries, including Japan, France, India and even Hong Kong. As NordVPN is one of the most popular VPNs with a massive number of subscribers, it’s regularly updated to bypass even the strictest geoblocks. We tested NordVPN with Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, SkyTV and Hulu while we connected to servers in various locations and didn’t encounter any issues connecting.

Nord is incredibly easy to use and so simple that anyone could pick it up. Switching between server countries is an absolute breeze and NordVPN actually comes pre-installed on a lot of modern routers. For those of you concerned about your online security, NordVPN is packed full of security features too and even allows you to encrypt your information twice with double VPN protection.

NordVPN is an incredibly reliable, ultra-fast and cost-effective VPN that we’ve never encountered any issues with. Whether you’re wanting to stream The US Office or tap into the UK’s BBC iPlayer to watch British documentaries, NordVPN is guaranteed to do everything that you could ever want your VPN to do when it comes to streaming.

2. ExpressVPN

While ExpressVPN didn’t manage to take our top spot for the best VPN for streaming in 2021, it’s certainly not far behind. While ExpressVPN doesn’t have as many servers as NordVPN, it does offer access to more locations, which makes it the perfect choice for anyone that prefers watching films and TV shows in different countries rather than their own.

ExpressVPN offers some of the fastest speeds out there, meaning you won’t have any issues streaming Netflix at the highest possible quality. Because ExpressVPN is so easy to set up, you can literally have everything ready to go in less than five minutes once you’ve created an account. The user interface is fantastic, too, allowing you to automatically connect to servers that offer the fastest possible speeds. All of the top security features are there, too, and a strict no-logging policy means you’ll never have to worry about your personal information falling into the hands of people you wouldn’t want it to.

ExpressVPN Bottom Line

One of the things we love most about ExpressVPN is how reliable it is. We’ve been using the VPN for years and we are yet to encounter any issues with Netflix or Amazon Prime Video. It even works a treat with most of the smaller streaming services, too. In addition to ultra-fast speeds and a reliable connection, you’ll also be able to benefit from top-class security features, ensuring you’ll always be safe online. Regardless of what you’re watching and what platform you’re streaming it on, ExpressVPN is one of the best VPNs out there.

CyberGhost has the largest selection of servers out of any VPN and many of these servers have been optimized to work with specific streaming services. When you log into your account, you’ll be able to choose from a light of optimized streaming servers located in countries all over the world. This means you can always rely on CyberGhost to deliver its promise that you’ll never have any issues bypassing the geoblocks that many of these streaming platforms use.

It’s got one of the strictest no-logging policies out there and supports one of the fastest VPN protocols available. To help keep you safe online, CyberGhost provides military-grade encryption, perfect for utilising its P2P servers to the max, and the speeds are fast enough to support ultra-HD streaming.

CyberGhost VPN Bottom Line

You’ll struggle to find another VPN that offers the same level of streaming support as CyberGhost and at such an incredibly cheap price. With the ability to unblock pretty much every streaming platform out there while letting you stream your favourite films and TV shows at the highest quality, we can’t praise CyberGhost highly enough.

4.PureVPN

Whether you’re planning on watching Netflix from your PlayStation 4 or Amazon Prime Video upstairs on your cell phone while you’re in bed, PureVPN has apps for nearly every device out there, making this VPN one of the easiest ways to enhance your online streaming experience. Better still, the ability to connect seamlessly via your cell phone means you can watch your favourite movies while you’re travelling.

PureVPN is just as serious about security as it is with streaming, which is why your devices are all protected with AES 356-bit encryption from the moment you’re connected. You’ll also benefit from DNS leak protection, Multi Login, split tunnelling and the ability to stream sports from anywhere in the world thanks to a massive network of privately owned servers. Speeds may not be as fast as ExpressVPN or NordVPN but you won’t have any issues streaming Netflix or anything else at the highest possible quality.

Optimized streaming servers for uninterrupted Netflix binges

PureVPN Speed

Not Recommended for... As it’s based in Hong Kong, we’re still a little sceptical about the true depth of PureVPN’s ‘no-logging’ policy.

PureVPN Bottom Line

With servers located all over the world and some fantastic native app support, PureVPN is a fantastic VPN choice for any film or TV buff, especially when you consider there’s a seven-day trial on offer right now for just $0.99! Guaranteed to bypass the geoblocks used by Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Sky, Hulu and many more, you won’t be disappointed with PureVPN.

5.Windscribe VPN

Looking for a cheaper way to unblock Netflix? Windscribe might just be the VPN you’re looking for. While the free version of the VPN only allows you to connect to servers in the United States and Canada, an annual subscription for $4.08 per month will get you access to servers in over 63 countries. If you’ve already got your heart set on the films and TV shows you want to watch and where you need to be to watch them, Windscribe’s build-your-own plan could save you a lot of money as you only pay for the countries you want to access.

We didn’t have any issues unblocking Netflix or Amazon Prime Video, but Windscribe does struggle to unblock some of the British streaming apps such as BBC iPlayer and ITV Player, partly due to the fact that it’s not clear how many servers Windscribe actually has access to. It’s important to note that Windscribe only works on desktop and browsers, which means it won’t be much use if your primary way of watching Netflix is through your PS4 or TV. Thankfully, if you are watching through Chrome or Firefox, you won’t have to worry about any annoying ads or malware, as Windscribe has some excellent antivirus software included with it.

One of the cheapest ways to access US and Canadian Netflix libraries

Windscribe VPN Speed

Not Recommended for... Windscribe is cheap but doesn’t offer the same level of service as other VPNs that are optimized for streaming, especially when it’s only available through desktop and browser extensions

Windscribe VPN Bottom Line

If you’re looking for a quick and easy way to unblock Netflix directly through your Mac or Laptop, Windscribe is a cheap and cheerful VPN choice that has been proven to work with some of the biggest streaming services. That said, we did come up against some issues when we were using Windscribe with streaming platforms located in the UK and Netflix didn’t work in all of the country locations.

6.Surfshark

We love Surfshark because not only are its subscription plans cheap, you’ll be able to connect an unlimited number of devices simultaneously, making Surfshark is a great choice for large households that are all streaming Netflix at the same time (just make sure you’re not the unlucky one paying for the others’ subscriptions!) It’s able to unblock Netflix libraries in countries with some of the best libraries of films and TV shows, including Japan and the United Kingdom. In fact, its compatibility with UK servers is generally excellent, meaning you won’t have any issues unblocking the likes of ITV Player and BBC iPlayer.

In addition to offering a large selection of over 1700 servers in 63 countries, we didn’t have any issues with slow connections. Surfshark was incredibly fast and reliable, making it an excellent choice for streaming. You can pick-up a 2-year plan starting at just $1.99 per month, and additional features such as a killswitch, camouflage mode, MultiHop and a strict no-logging policy that’s independently audited by a third-party security company will guarantee your anonymity, helping you to stay safe online.

Quick connect US server 23 ms 56 Mbps 34 Mbps

Not Recommended for... While Surfshark has excellent compatibility with a wide variety of devices, we did encounter issues trying to unblock Hulu and BBC iPlayer from the mobile app in certain countries such as the United Kingdom.

Surfshark Bottom Line

Considering the price, Surfshark is honestly one of the best VPNs out there for streaming and even offers a 7-day free trial so you can give it a spin for yourself before you commit to a two-year plan. With impressive speeds, a consistent connection, and a vast amount of servers to choose from, you’ll struggle to find many other VPNs that offer this level of streaming support at such a low cost. If you can’t afford a NordVPN or ExpressVPN subscription, this is an excellent alternative.

7.VyprVPN

Given its one of the biggest VPNs out there, VyprVPN is strong enough to strike down the geoblocks used by many of the biggest streaming services, in addition to a lot of smaller services such as ITV Player, Channel 4 (UK), NHL.TV and Crunchyroll. You can check out a full list of all the streaming services that VyprVPN can unblock here. As our streaming experts don’t believe anything they read on the internet without checking it, one of the first things we did was put VyprVPN to the test, and we didn’t encounter any issues geo-filtering Netflix, Amazon Prime Video or Disney+, which is notorious for not working with many VPNs.

VyprVPN may not have the largest selection of servers, especially in comparison to other providers, but they’re decent quality and offer fairly impressive speeds. Ultimately, as long as there are enough to let you watch your favorite films and TV shows from a variety of different locations, that’s plenty. Using VyprVPN means you won’t have to worry about your ISP throttling your bandwidth, allowing you to stream without any annoying interruptions. There are plenty of security features to keep you safe too, including military-grade encryption, a kill switch, DNS leak protection, and a strict no-logging policy that’s fully verified and audited by an external company.

Quick connect JP server 419 ms 36.29 Mbps 8.98 Mbps
Quick connect AU server 350 ms 29.42 Mbps 7.65 Mbps

Not Recommended for... While it’s possible to stream in 4K, you’ll need a strong internet connection to make up for VyprVPN’s speeds in certain server locations.

VyprVPN Bottom Line

It’s Chameleon technology means VyprVPN can access blocked streaming services and websites from anywhere in the world, making it the ideal option for people that live in countries, such as China, with strict internet censorship. It may not have the largest network, but VyprVPN’s servers are reliable and strong enough to bypass most of the geoblocks out there.

8.Ivacy

IvacyVPN is a cheap but cheerful provider that can unblock anything you want to watch in Japan, Europe, and the United States with little difficulty. It supports all major platforms, and its excellent compatibility with routers means you can connect to Ivacy servers through your PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles to access Netflix and Amazon Prime Video apps in other countries. It’s simple to use, easy to install, and will protect your devices against most common forms of intrusion thanks to excellent security features like AES 256-bit encryption, DDoS protection, and IPv6 leak protection.

We tested IvacyVPN with all of the major streaming services that are out there, including Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, HBO Now, BBC iPlayer and Netflix, and didn’t encounter any issues, even when we were connected through servers in locations such as Japan and India. You won’t have to mess around figuring out which servers offer the best connection either, as IvacyVPN offers an instant connect feature for servers that’ve been optimized for streaming Netflix.

Great companion for anyone interested in using a VPN for streaming.

IvacyVPN Speed

Not Recommended for... As IvacyVPN is located in Singapore, some users have raised concerns about the validity of its no-logging policy. If you’re using it to torrent, you may want to look for a VPN outside of the five-eyes and 14-eyes jurisdiction.

IvacyVPN Bottom Line

It may be one of the smaller services, but IvacyVPN offers a lot of great features and geo-filtering potential. While speeds did fall behind in comparison to others, we didn’t encounter any major issues unblocking the likes of Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, making this a great companion for anyone interested in using a VPN for streaming.

9.IPVanish

If you’re looking for power and performance, IPVanish is a great choice, especially since you can connect up to ten devices at once. It supports multiple protocols, making it as adaptable as possible with some great bespoke apps for iOS, Android, Linux and Chrome devices. As IPVanish owns all of its servers, it has far more control over how its network runs, meaning you’ll be able to benefit from faster speeds as a result. There are some excellent security features too, including SugarSync cloud storage which is included for free in all subscriptions.

We didn’t encounter any issues trying to unblock Netflix or Amazon Prime Video, but we weren’t able to unblock British streaming services such as BBC iPlayer, Channel 4, and ITV Player. Similarly, while we could connect to Netflix in the United States and Canada, some servers didn’t allow us to access Netflix libraries in the United States and Europe.

Works with

IPVanish Key Features

Quick connect JP server 429 ms 31.29 Mbps Mbps
Quick connect AU server 358 ms 29.10 Mbps 7.24 Mbps

Not Recommended for... IPVanish doesn’t offer the same geo-filtering potential as larger providers such as ExpressVPN and NordVPN, which means you won’t be able to access all of the streaming services that are out there.

IPVanish Bottom Line

While it might not work with every streaming service, the consistent quality of its servers’ connection speeds and the ability to connect up to ten devices at once offers excellent value for money and makes IPVanish a great choice for anyone that wants to access Netflix.

10.PrivateVPN

PrivateVPN is a small Swedish provider, offering unlimited bandwidth and server switching across all of its plans – perfect for jumping between different server locations if you fancy a Japanese anime binge rather than British sitcoms. Using the VPN is easy, as PrivateVPN has a great user interface and excellent compatibility with a wide range of devices. Better still, it’s optimized some of its servers for streaming and lists which streaming services and in what locations are supported.

We were able to connect to Netflix in the US, UK, and parts of Europe without any problems by using the dedicated streaming servers (normal servers didn’t fare so well). Hulu, ABC, and Sky worked well too. PrivateVPN isn’t one of the fastest we’ve used, but the speeds were still impressive. You can trust it to keep you safe, too, thanks to security features such as military-grade encryption and DNS leak protection, but the killswitch feature only works on servers in the United States.

Works with

PrivateVPN Key Features

Dedicated streaming servers Yes
Available On: Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, Linux, Chrome, Firefox, and compatible routers
Data logging Strict no-logging policy
Money-back guarantee 30 days
Number of servers Over 150
Top download speed reached 74 Mbps
VPN locations Over 60 countries
Maximum devices supported Up to 6
Plans Monthly / 3 Month / 13 month (one month free) plans available
24/7 live chat Yes

Great user interface and wide range of devices.

PrivateVPN Speed

Not Recommended for... With only a few servers that are optimized for streaming, we’re worried that PrivateVPN may not have the strength to keep up-to-date with streaming services when they enforce stronger geoblocks.

PrivateVPN Bottom Line

PrivateVPN is easy to use and easy to install, while promising that less-experienced VPN users won’t feel overwhelmed by it due to its small number of servers that are optimized for streaming. That said, speeds weren’t that great and definitely aren’t strong enough to support streaming in Ultra HD. Its Swedish location also raises some questions about its no-logging policy, despite how ‘strict’ PrivateVPN says it is.

FAQ

Can You Trust Your VPN Service?

Your VPN is meant to keep you anonymous online and with that promise comes a certain level of trust between you and your VPN provider. One of the easiest ways to check whether or not a VPN is trustworthy is by looking at its privacy policy to see if it operates with a ‘no-logging policy’. A no-logging policy is your VPN provider’s promise to you that they will not log or share any of your personal information. This means your online anonymity and privacy are protected from everybody, including your VPN provider, and that if special services ever come knocking at your VPN’s door, they won’t hold any information that can be used to identify you.
If a VPN provider’s privacy policy seems vague, or if it doesn’t go into great detail about how it processes and/or stores your personal information, approach it with caution. Another important thing to look out for is where your VPN provider is located, as its location will determine its legal compliance with authorities. The 14 eyes, nine eyes and five eyes alliances are built up of certain countries that are legally obliged to share information with each other. If you take your anonymity seriously, which is important if you’re using a VPN in a country where they’re banned, Always check to see if a VPN is located outside of the 14, nine and five-eyes alliance zones.

Understanding the Limitations of a VPN Service

While VPNs are one of the most effective ways to stream blocked films and TV shows, it’s important to understand their limitations, especially when it comes to security. VPNs do keep you anonymous online, but no service, regardless of how powerful it is, is ever able to guarantee 100% anonymity.
Finally, it’s important to note that your VPN connection will only ever be as strong as your normal internet connection. While VPNs are a fantastic way of avoiding bandwidth throttling which means your internet connection won’t be choked during peak times, you’re still relying on your local internet connection for its strength. This means in order to get the most out of a VPN, you still need a quality internet connection – or a decent amount of data if you’re using mobile data.

Can a VPN be Blocked by Streaming Services?

We’ve checked all of the VPNs on this list to ensure they’re able to unblock the most popular streaming services out there, but new updates from content providers could mean that, occasionally, some of the VPNs we’ve included may not work in certain countries. That said, we’ve only included VPNs that are powerful enough to bypass many of the updates that services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video put out.
For complete ease-of-mind when it comes to VPN performance, make sure you choose a heavy hitter like NordVPN or ExpressVPN, as these are the two VPNs that struggle the least with bypassing geoblocks.

Summary

Make sure you get the most out of your Netflix, Amazon Prime Video or Hulu subscription. Connecting your devices to a VPN allows you to effortly watch films and TV shows from all over the world, or use streaming apps in countries that normally block them. If you’re not using a VPN already, remember they have lots of other benefits too, like including your online security by encrypting your information and enhancing your online gaming experience if you’re a PS4 or Xbox One owner.

You’ve got the remote and thousands of unwatched TV shows and films at your fingertips. Get out there and explore them with a VPN!
